Comment of the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine regarding the reaction of the press service of the Kremlin on the so-called "referendum" in Donetsk and Lugansk regions
13 May 2014 22:46

Comments made by the Kremlin regarding the so-called "referendum" in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions do not contribute to de-escalation of the situation.

By expressing "respect" to the events that occurred in the conditions of terror brought by the illegal armed bandits, the Russian side recognizes acceptance for a practice of intimidation of people, undisguised fraud and disregard for any democratic procedures. This is contrary to all generally accepted international principles and standards.

Relying on the "practical implementation of referenda results", the Kremlin directly encourages illegitimate actions. Russia resorts to manipulations with the so-called "referenda", misleading the international community.

This practice of manipulations with people’s attitudes will never be acceptable for Ukraine. Our citizens instead are interested in genuine inclusive dialogue to be focused on real and painful social, economic and political issues rather than on changing state borders.

The Government of Ukraine confirms once again its commitment to the national unity dialogue that will include all people of good will from all regions of our country. To this end, our country will begin large-scale project "round tables", which allows all to hear each other and understand each other on the basis of law and democratic values.
