President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko is ready to submit to the Parliament a draft law on adjudication in absentia regarding the offenders who are hiding out abroad.
"Why are those who shot people on Instytutska Street and on Maidan still not punished? I was always against adjudication in absentia. But now I am ready to give up this principle and submit a draft law that allows trial in absentia in exceptional cases. We have no reasons to wait for the delivery of a criminal. And it is impossible to explain people why these criminals are still not punished. That is why the Parliament should vote for the permission to hold public and transparent trial in absentia," the Head of State said.
According to the President, one must provide the opportunity for the defendant to speak in his own defense.
"The trial must be held in the name of Ukraine. It should bring to responsibility and condemn criminals guilty of bringing Ukraine to the point in which we were in February," Petro Poroshenko emphasized.
The Head of State notes that the soldiers of "Berkut" and the Interior Troops who defended Motherland in the ATO area after the developments on Maidan should be protected. "Those who defended the state with weapons in their hands, who risked their lives and fought bravely, have the right to be protected," the President said.
