President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko had a meeting with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland.
The parties discussed the implementation of Minsk agreements on the settlement of the situation in certain districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Particularly, they underlined the necessity of establishing full control over the Ukrainian-Russian border as the key factor for the further peaceful settlement. The Head of State emphasized the need of restoring the work of Ukrainian border guards and involving the OSCE experts with proper technical equipment in the monitoring at the frontier line. "It is impossible to achieve peaceful settlement unless full control over the border is established," the President stressed.
The Head of State mentioned the necessity of taking urgent measures to avoid humanitarian disaster in the seized territories given the approximation of winter period. It goes about the restoration of supply of gas, electricity and food products.
The President also noted the importance of restoring the broadcast of Ukrainian TV channels in Donetsk and Luhansk.
The Head of State expressed gratitude to the President and the Government of the United States for "a very strong support of Ukraine on its way to freedom and democracy".
In her turn, Victoria Nuland expressed hope that in the course of the visit, the President of Ukraine had felt the support of the American people to the aspirations of Ukrainians for freedom and democracy. "I hope that you have felt the recognition of your own aspiration for peace and success in termination of the war," the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State said.
The parties discussed the possibility of increasing macro-financial assistance of the United States to Ukraine and the necessity of adopting the presidential anti-corruption package in this context.
