President: The future of Europe depends on Ukraine's struggle for freedom and democracy
20 January 2015 20:23

President Petro Poroshenko says that the future of Europe is directly related to Ukraine and Europe will only benefit from Ukraine's membership in the EU.

"No matter how many difficulties might lie ahead, if Europe stands together with Ukraine on the defense of freedom, dignity, democracy and life without fear, then the future of Europe will be safe and bright," the Head of State noted in his speech in the University of Zurich.

The Ukrainian President has started his working visit to Switzerland with his speech in the University of Zurich "Special lecture of Churchill 2015". This insitution is considered an academic center of the European Law and European Integration. It was here in 1946 that Sir Winston Churchill gave a speech on the future United Europe.

The Head of State noted that after terrorist attacks in France and shelling of the civilian bus near Volnovakha by terrorists, "the whole Europe must unite". "Only together democratic nations can stand up for the freedom of present and future generations of humankind to live without fear, without threat of terrorism and build brighter future. Values are not for sale and we must do what it takes to defend them," Petro Poroshenko said.

The Head of State says that after 70 years since the establishment of the European project, "Europe needs a new impetus". "The threats of Europe are the same as the threats for Ukraine. My country has declared a war against terrorism. It fights for the European values ike freedom, sovereignty and democracy. Terrorism knows no borders. The world has to react to these atrocities jointly and decisively," the President noted.

"Ukraine should become a full-fledged member of the European family of nations, while already being its indivisible historic, spiritual and intellectual part. Already being its guard and a new symbol," he said.

"Tolerance, empathy and support demonstrated by the Ukrainian people, sometimes speaking different languages and even practicing different religions, can serve a good example for Europe in a face of its current challenges," the President emphasized.

The President informed on the program of reforms, having emphasized the aspiration to achieve the European standards in 5 years and apply for a membership in the EU. "I believe that the Ukrainian people deserve to be a part of Churchill’s vision of a glorious and united Europe," the Head of State noted.
